The International Council of Nurses chose the 12th of May every year to celebrate and appreciate nurses worldwide; their contribution and impact on health care are acknowledged and appreciated.

This date is the birthday of the world’s most famous nurse and the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale; during this event, nurses are congratulated and they use the opportunity to educate health workers. This event was first celebrated on May 12th, 1965.

Nursing is the largest profession in the medical field, and they use this event to increase public awareness of the profession and to showcase their contribution towards healthcare innovation. The theme for this year’s event is “Nurses A Voice to Lead – Health is a Human right”.

The United Nations and the World Health Organization use this event to recruit and train nurses worldwide; this is because there is an estimate that shows that by 2030, the world will be short of health workers by 18 million people. So these organizations are taking serious action to recruit and train more people.

During this event, International Nurses’ Day Kit is distributed to nurses worldwide; this contains education materials and public information materials that can be used by nurses.

The public is urged to celebrate this day by appreciating a Nurse who helped you or a family member when sick; give them gifts and show them, love.
